How To Keep Your Teeth White

Having a brilliant smile of white teeth is an important aspect of beauty. Having discolored teeth can affect your appearance and negatively impact your self-confidence.

The first step to avoiding discolored teeth is understanding the causes. Though genetics do play a role for some people, for the most part, maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding foods and drinks that cause discoloration is all that is necessary to keep your teeth white.

What is Tooth Discoloration?

Teeth become discolored when dark pigments get lodged in the tooth’s enamel in microscopic pits and holes. The process can be very slow, so many people don’t know their teeth are becoming discolored over time until the change is dramatic enough to notice.

What Discolors Teeth?

The main causes of discoloration are certain drinks and tobacco.

Beverages like coffee, tea, red wine, and cola can all discolor teeth. Each glass only has a very small impact, but over time, regular consumption can darken your teeth dramatically.

Smoking and chewing tobacco also discolors teeth. Similarly, one cigarette will only have an imperceptible effect on tooth color, but over time those changes add up.

How to Keep Your Teeth White

Perhaps the most obvious way of keeping your teeth white is to avoid the previously mentioned causes of discoloration, but avoiding all those things might not be realistic.

Therefore, the best way to keep your teeth white is to brush your teeth often. It can be unhealthy for your gums to brush your teeth more than a couple times a day, but brushing twice a day will help remove the pigments from your teeth and keep them white.
